Online Counseling With the stay-at-home order and the practice of social distancing, it's basically not feasible to physically see a therapist. However, during such an uncertain time, we might need some professional help to sort out our anxiety, fear, or just thoughts in general. This is where online therapy comes into place. I will divide this subject into two, one is platforms focusing only on online therapy, and the other is therapy platforms with online options. a. platforms focusing on online therapy (1) BetterHelp (2) Talkspace b.platforms to find therapists, with online options (1) Open Path Collective (to use open path, you need to be qualified for a sliding scale price. When you apply, they will ask you to fill in some personal and financial information) (2) Psychology Today 2. Meditation You've probably heard about meditation here and there, now it's time to finally put it into practice. Meditation is proven to benefit your mental state, to give you a clearer mind, and a sense of being present in the current moment. The key to meditation is to focus on your breathe and be mindful and accepting to your thoughts coming in and out of your mind. You could practice meditation either on your own or use a guided meditation video or app. (For an introduction article on meditation, please click here. ) a. a quick beginner guide to (unguided) meditation on YouTube: b. guided meditation We find that guided meditation can be more beginner-friendly since the voice will guide your thoughts and make the process more purposeful. There are tons of guided meditation on YouTube, ranging in length, time you can practice it, and purpose. Below is our favorite guided meditation video, it's only 5 minutes long, and as it states, you can do it anytime, anywhere. Also, check out this app called Headspace. If you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed at the moment, we recommend a breathing exercise called box breathing: 3. Exercise It is scientifically proved that exercising is a mood and immune system booster. Whether you have been active in the past or not, now it's a great opportunity to start exercising. Although gyms are basically all closed down, we can still achieve our daily activity goals by doing at home workouts, taking walks in the neighborhood, walking your dog, etc. (Just make sure to practice social distancing and stay 6 ft away from people passing by! ) In this post, we are sharing some links to some workout programs and YouTube channels that are free and have workouts different in length, fitness level, and purpose. a. programs (1) NTC (Nike Training Club) In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, Nike has made the premium membership on their workout app free. On this app, there are individual workouts as well as programs instructed by athlete trainers. (2) Down Dog Down Dog is a company that owns different workout apps including yoga, HIIT, and 7 minute workouts. They also make the apps free until May 1st becasue of the COVID-19 pandemic. b. YouTube Channels (1) Fitness Blender Fitness Blender is founded by a couple who are enthusiastic in working out. They have different types of workout videos on their channel, targeting different areas of the body, or just stretching videos for a cool down. They can also be found on their own website. (2) Yoga with Adriene Adriene is a yoga instructor, and she has follow-along yoga practice videos varying in length, difficulty and purpose. So, we went through three methods that could hopefully ease your anxiety and make this tough time more bearable. Therapy is a great way to communicate and express your emotions and feelings without being judged and while being guided; meditation and breathing exercise are a handy tools that can save you from drowning in your endless thoughts; and exercising is a great outlet for the bottled-up's.
